What is cerebellar tonsillar ectopia symptoms?

Cerebellar tonsillar ectopia (CTE) occurs when the cerebellar tonsils, which are located in the back of the brain, descend beyond their normal position and into the spinal canal. This can increase pressure on the lower part of the brain and spinal cord, leading to a variety of symptoms.

Some common symptoms of CTE include:

  1. Headaches – often located in the back of the head and neck

  2. Neck pain – may be a result of increased pressure on the spine

  3. Dizziness – feeling unsteady or lightheaded

  4. Vision problems – double vision, blurred vision or sensitivity to light

  5. Nausea and vomiting – may be triggered by the pressure on the brain

  6. Difficulty with balance and coordination – may result in clumsiness or unsteadiness

  7. Tingling or numbness in the limbs – due to pressure on the spinal cord

  8. Weakness in the arms or legs – may be caused by the pressure on the spinal cord

If left untreated, CTE can lead to other serious complications like obstructive hydrocephalus, a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and brainstem compression. It is important to see a doctor if you have any of these symptoms, as they can be related to other conditions as well.
